Complete vs. incomplete protein: what actually matters

What makes a protein "complete"
Of the 20 amino acids that make up protein, 9 are essential — your body can't synthesize them, so they must come from food. A complete protein supplies all 9 essential amino acids in reasonably sufficient amounts. Nearly all animal proteins (meat, fish, eggs, dairy) are complete. Among plant foods, soy, quinoa, and buckwheat are complete proteins too — the exception rather than the rule.
An incomplete protein is low in one or more essential amino acids. Most individual plant proteins — beans, rice, nuts, most grains — fall into this category.
The "protein combining" myth
You may have heard you need to eat complementary plant proteins (like rice and beans) at the same meal to get a complete amino acid profile. This isn't accurate — your body maintains a pool of amino acids and can combine what you eat across an entire day, not just a single meal. As long as your overall diet includes a reasonable variety of protein sources, hitting your total daily protein target matters far more than pairing specific foods together.[1]
