Dairy-free calcium foods and how to compare them

Dairy can be a convenient calcium source, but it is not the only way to build an adequate pattern.

Quick answer: Find calcium in fortified plant beverages, calcium-set tofu, canned fish with bones, and selected greens while checking labels and serving sizes.

Fortified foods do substantial work

Fortified plant beverages can provide calcium and vitamin D, but products vary. Shake the container when instructed because calcium may settle, and compare protein and added sugar if those matter to you.

Other useful sources

Calcium-set tofu, canned salmon or sardines with edible bones, some greens, beans, tahini, and fortified foods contribute. Oxalates reduce calcium absorption from some plants, so listed calcium does not always equal absorbed calcium.

Life stage matters

Children, teenagers, pregnancy, lactation, older age, and osteoporosis risk can change the importance of planning. Milk allergy differs from lactose intolerance, and anyone excluding many foods should seek individualized support.
