Do elimination diets actually improve performance?

High-profile athletes like Novak Djokovic have made gluten-free and elimination diets look like a performance secret. Controlled research tells a more boring story.

What the research actually shows

In athletes without celiac disease or a diagnosed gluten sensitivity, controlled trials have found that a short-term gluten-free diet produces no measurable change in performance, gastrointestinal symptoms, or inflammatory markers compared to a normal mixed diet.[9] That holds despite gluten-free eating being popular among endurance athletes specifically for perceived performance and gut-comfort benefits.

So why do some athletes swear by it?

A few likely explanations that don't require gluten itself being the problem: cutting gluten usually means cutting a lot of processed food, refined sugar, and low-fiber packaged carbs at the same time — the same changes that show up in a lot of "clean eating" diets that improve digestion and energy regardless of gluten. There's also a real placebo effect in sports performance, and undiagnosed non-celiac gastrointestinal sensitivity does exist in a minority of people, even without full celiac disease.

The actual risk
