Hot-weather exercise: hydration, sodium, and fueling

Start with the environment

Temperature, humidity, sun, clothing, pace, body size, and acclimatization influence sweat and heat strain. Reduce intensity when conditions demand it and schedule sessions for cooler times when possible.

Replace losses without racing the bottle

Arrive normally hydrated and drink according to conditions, duration, access, and individual sweat loss. Both severe dehydration and excessive water intake can be dangerous. Long, salty, sweaty sessions may require sodium as well as water.

Fuel still matters

Carbohydrate supports prolonged work, but hot conditions can reduce appetite and gastrointestinal tolerance. Cooler fluids, smaller frequent intake, and familiar foods or drinks may help. Confusion, fainting, or altered behavior is an emergency sign.
