How to compare grocery unit prices without buying more than you can use
The largest package is not automatically the best value. Unit price is a useful starting point, but the cheapest usable food is the food your household can store, prepare, and finish.
What a unit price tells you
A unit price converts package price into a common amount, such as dollars per ounce, pound, liter, or 100 grams. When two products use the same unit, the smaller number costs less for that amount.
A $3.60 bag containing 24 ounces costs $0.15 per ounce. A $2.40 bag containing 12 ounces costs $0.20 per ounce. The larger bag is cheaper per ounce—but only if the extra food is useful.
Put both products in the same unit
Do not compare dollars per pound with dollars per ounce until you convert them. One pound equals 16 ounces. For metric packages, one kilogram equals 1,000 grams. Store shelf tags can help, but verify that both tags use the same unit and refer to the same product form.
For concentrates, dried foods, and products requiring water, package weight alone may not describe prepared yield. Compare the number of realistic portions or the prepared amount when that answers the shopping question better.
Edible yield changes value
Bone, peel, pits, shells, drained liquid, and trimming can reduce the amount eaten. A boneless product may cost more per package pound but less per edible pound. Canned beans listed by total can weight and a dry bag of beans require different yield assumptions.
Precision is rarely necessary. Ask whether the difference is large enough to survive ordinary waste and whether one form saves preparation time that your household actually values.
A sale is not savings when food is discarded
Bulk packs can lower unit cost but increase spoilage, freezer demand, storage clutter, or monotony. Before buying, name the meals, confirm storage space, and decide whether part will be frozen or shared. A smaller package with a higher unit price can be the less expensive choice when it prevents waste.
Compare the version you will eat
Generic and store brands can provide similar nutrition at a lower price, but compare serving size, ingredients, allergens, sodium, added sugar, and fortification when relevant. A product rejected for taste or texture has poor value even when its unit price wins.
Convenience also has value. Pre-cut produce may reduce waste for someone with limited time, vision, strength, or dexterity. The correct comparison includes money, edible yield, labor, equipment, and likelihood of use.
A five-question store check
- Are the unit-price units identical?
- How much of each package is edible?
- Can I store the larger option safely?
- Which meals will use it before quality declines?
- Does preparation time or accessibility change the real value?
Use the math to inform the choice, not to shame a household for buying the form that works.
