How to read a nutrition study
Nutrition headlines rarely tell you what the underlying study actually measured — here's what to check before trusting a claim.
- Study design — a randomized controlled trial is stronger evidence than an observational study, which is stronger than a case report; headlines rarely specify which one you're reading about
- Sample size and duration — a 12-person, 2-week study can't tell you much about long-term outcomes in the general population
- Human vs. animal/cell studies — a striking result in mice doesn't automatically translate to humans
- Association vs. causation — observational studies can show two things are correlated without proving one causes the other
- Funding and conflicts of interest — industry-funded research isn't automatically wrong, but it's worth checking who paid for it
- Has it been replicated? — a single study is a data point, not a verdict; look for whether other research supports the same conclusion
