Descending order by weight
The first ingredient contributes the greatest weight before processing, followed by the next. Water loss during baking or cooking means the finished proportions can differ from the initial list.
Names and grouping
Sugars, oils, starches, and additives can appear under several names. Compound ingredients may have their own sub-ingredients. Allergens are especially important, but rules and formatting vary by country.
Combine with the Nutrition Facts
Use serving size, fiber, sodium, added sugars, saturated fat, protein, and relevant micronutrients alongside the ingredient list. A long list is not automatically harmful, and a short list is not automatically nutritionally complete.
