Does meal frequency matter for macros and metabolism?

Three meals, six meals, one meal — does the number actually change anything, or just how you get to the same daily total?

The idea that eating more frequently "stokes your metabolism" isn't well supported — total daily calories and macros appear to matter far more than how many meals they're split across. Digesting food does burn a small number of calories (the thermic effect of food), but that's roughly proportional to total food eaten, not the number of separate meals.

Where meal frequency does matter

Practical factors, not metabolic ones: more frequent smaller meals may help some people manage hunger and adherence, while fewer larger meals may suit others' schedules and appetite better. For muscle building specifically, spreading protein across 3–4 meals (rather than one large dose) appears to modestly support muscle protein synthesis better.[1] Pick the pattern you can sustain — it's a bigger lever than the theoretical metabolic difference.
