Nitrogen balance explained

Protein is roughly 16% nitrogen by weight, which makes nitrogen a convenient marker for tracking whether your body is building or breaking down protein tissue overall.

What it measures

Nitrogen balance compares nitrogen intake (from dietary protein) to nitrogen losses (mainly through urine, with smaller amounts through skin and feces). The result falls into one of three states:

  • Positive balance — intake exceeds losses; the body is building more protein tissue than it's breaking down (growth, pregnancy, muscle building, recovery from illness)
  • Negative balance — losses exceed intake; the body is breaking down more protein than it's replacing (inadequate protein intake, illness, severe calorie restriction)
  • Equilibrium — intake matches losses; typical for a healthy, weight-stable adult eating adequate protein

For athletes and people building muscle, staying in positive or neutral nitrogen balance by eating enough protein is a practical way to support muscle protein synthesis and avoid unwanted muscle breakdown, especially during a calorie deficit.[1] Research labs measure nitrogen balance directly, but for practical purposes, hitting your daily protein target is the everyday equivalent.
