Nutrient density explained
Two foods with identical calories and macros can deliver very different amounts of actual nutrition.
Nutrient density describes how much nutritional value (vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein quality) a food provides relative to its calorie content. A food can be "energy dense" (lots of calories) without being nutrient dense, or vice versa — steamed broccoli and a candy bar can have wildly different nutrient density despite both containing carbohydrate calories.
Why it matters even if your macros are perfect
Hitting a protein/fat/carb target doesn't guarantee adequate vitamin, mineral, or fiber intake — that's the core limitation of pure macro tracking discussed in our IIFYM article. Prioritizing nutrient-dense foods (vegetables, fruit, lean proteins, whole grains, legumes) within your calorie and macro targets is how you get both numbers right and genuinely well-nourished.
