Build a predictable framework
Many workers do well with a substantial meal before the shift, smaller meals or snacks during it, and a lighter meal before daytime sleep. Others need a different pattern. Consistency can make hunger and planning more predictable.
Use caffeine early enough
Caffeine can improve alertness but may remain active into the sleep period. Place it earlier in the shift when possible and test a cutoff that protects post-shift sleep.
Prepare for the workplace
Bring food when choices are limited: a protein food, carbohydrate base, produce, and a satisfying snack. Persistent digestive problems, severe sleepiness, or safety concerns deserve occupational or medical support.
