What's the best breakfast for muscle gain?

There's no magic breakfast that builds muscle by itself — but a poorly built one can make hitting your daily protein target considerably harder.

What actually matters

The main thing a good muscle-building breakfast does is contribute meaningfully to your daily protein target — aiming for roughly 25-40g of protein at breakfast (eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, a protein shake) makes the rest of the day's target easier to hit than starting with a protein-light meal like cereal or a plain bagel.[1] There's no special muscle-building property to eating specifically in the morning — it's the same principle as any other meal, just easier to underweight if breakfast defaults to mostly carbs.
