Biotin: food sources, hair claims, and the lab-test interference risk

Biotin is necessary, but “necessary” does not mean more is better. High-dose biotin can interfere with laboratory tests—including tests used in urgent medical decisions.

What biotin does

Biotin is a B vitamin used by enzymes that metabolize fatty acids, glucose, and amino acids. Adults have an Adequate Intake of 30 micrograms per day; the value is 35 micrograms while breastfeeding.

An Adequate Intake is used when evidence is insufficient to establish a Recommended Dietary Allowance. It is still an intake reference, not a treatment dose.

Food sources and variability

Meat, fish, cooked eggs, organ meats, seeds, nuts, sweet potatoes, spinach, and broccoli can provide biotin. Food composition data are less complete for biotin than for many nutrients, so exact rankings can look more certain than the evidence.

Raw egg whites contain avidin, a protein that binds biotin. Cooking denatures avidin. Ordinary consumption of cooked eggs is not the classic concern.

Deficiency is unusual

True deficiency is rare. Risk can rise with a rare biotinidase disorder, chronic consumption of large amounts of raw egg white, some antiseizure medicines, or other specific clinical circumstances. Symptoms can involve hair thinning, rash, neurological changes, and other findings that require medical assessment.

Hair and nail marketing outruns evidence

Biotin is heavily promoted for hair, skin, and nails, but evidence supporting supplements in people without deficiency is limited. Hair loss and brittle nails have many causes; treating the label on a bottle can delay finding the real one.

Tell the laboratory and your clinician

High supplemental biotin can distort immunoassay laboratory results. Depending on the test design, results can appear falsely high or falsely low. NIH and FDA have warned about interference with tests including some thyroid and cardiac troponin assays.

Do not guess how long to stop a supplement before testing. Dose, assay, timing, kidney function, and clinical urgency matter. Tell the ordering clinician, laboratory, and pharmacist the product and dose. In an emergency, do not delay care because you took biotin.

A practical lab-test checklist

Before blood work, list every supplement, including hair-and-nail gummies, multivitamins, B-complex products, energy products, and powders. Record the biotin amount and unit; 5,000 micrograms equals 5 milligrams, so unit conversion can hide how large a dose is.

Tell both the ordering clinician and the laboratory. Do not rely on a front-label phrase such as “beauty blend,” because biotin may appear only in the Supplement Facts panel. Follow the care team’s timing instructions rather than a generic internet rule for stopping it.

If a test result conflicts sharply with symptoms or earlier results, biotin is one possible interference—not the only explanation. Clinicians and laboratories can choose alternative assays, repeat testing, or interpret timing. In emergency care, mention biotin promptly but never postpone evaluation for chest pain or another urgent symptom.
