Fiber and your gut microbiome
You don't digest fiber. The trillions of bacteria in your large intestine do — and what they produce from it is the interesting part.
What fermentation actually produces
Fiber passes through the small intestine largely intact. In the colon, gut bacteria ferment the soluble, fermentable fraction of it and produce short-chain fatty acids — mainly acetate, propionate, and butyrate. Butyrate is the preferred fuel of the cells lining your colon, which is a striking arrangement: you feed the bacteria, and the bacteria feed your gut lining.[1]

Feeding a diverse microbiome
The single most consistent finding in this area is that plant diversity matters more than any one "superfood." Different bacterial species ferment different fibers, so a diet drawing on a wide range of plants supports a wider range of species than a diet built on one high-fiber food.
- Legumes — beans, lentils, chickpeas
- Whole grains — oats, barley, rye
- A varied mix of vegetables, fruit, nuts, and seeds
- Fermented foods, which add live bacteria alongside the fiber that feeds them
Increase it gradually
Jumping from a low-fiber diet to a very high-fiber one in a few days reliably produces gas and bloating while your microbiome adjusts. Increase over a few weeks and raise water intake alongside it.
