The short version: Water from drinks and food both count. Thirst works well for many healthy people in ordinary conditions, while heat, long exercise, illness, pregnancy, and older age can require more deliberate planning.

Where the headline numbers come from

The National Academies set Adequate Intakes for total water—not plain water alone—at 3.7 liters per day for adult men and 2.7 liters for adult women. Those figures include moisture from all beverages and foods and were based on typical intakes among generally hydrated people. They are not minimum drinking quotas for every body.

Why needs change

Sweating, altitude, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and some medications can change fluid needs. So can diet: soups, fruit, vegetables, yogurt, and other moist foods contribute water, while a hot outdoor job creates a very different problem than a cool office day.

Useful signs, with limits

Thirst and urine colour can offer practical feedback, but neither is a medical test. Pale yellow urine often accompanies adequate hydration; very dark urine can suggest a need for fluid, but vitamins, foods, and medications also alter colour. Persistent excessive thirst, very frequent urination, dizziness, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down deserves medical attention.

Exercise and heat

Begin activity normally hydrated, drink according to conditions and individual sweat loss, and avoid both severe dehydration and forced overdrinking. During prolonged, sweaty exercise, sodium and carbohydrate may matter as well as water. Competitive athletes benefit from a personalized plan rather than copying someone else’s bottle schedule.

More is not always better

Drinking far beyond losses can dilute blood sodium, a dangerous condition called hyponatremia. The goal is balance. For everyday life, keep water accessible, drink with meals, respond to thirst, and adjust when the environment or your health changes.
