Intuitive eating explained: is it right for you?

Intuitive eating gets dismissed as "no rules" — it's actually a structured framework, and it's not the right fit for every goal.

What it actually is

Intuitive eating is a framework built around recognizing internal hunger and fullness cues, rejecting a strict "good food/bad food" mentality, and decoupling eating from external rules like meal timing windows or macro targets. It's a defined approach with real structure, not simply "eat whatever, whenever" — as we noted in our athlete diets piece, Simone Biles has spoken about using this approach deliberately rather than as an absence of a plan.

Who it tends to work well for

It tends to suit people with a history of restrictive dieting or disordered eating patterns, where rigid tracking itself becomes a source of stress, and people whose goal is general health maintenance rather than a specific body-composition target. It's a harder fit for anyone with a precise physique or performance goal (a physique competition prep, a specific strength-to-weight target), where hitting numeric macro targets consistently really does matter more than it does for general health.
