Phosphorus is a structural part of bones and teeth and is present in ATP, DNA, RNA, and phospholipid cell membranes.

What it does

Because phosphorus is widespread in food, deficiency from diet alone is uncommon. Absorption varies: phosphate additives are often absorbed readily, while some phosphorus in plant phytate is less available.

Dairy, meat, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, grains, and processed foods with phosphate additives can all contribute. Ingredient names containing “phos” can indicate added phosphates.

Safety and individual context

People with chronic kidney disease may need individualized phosphorus management because impaired kidneys can struggle to maintain balance. Do not broadly restrict nutritious foods without renal guidance.
