Protein Guide
Protein powder 101: whey, casein, and plant blends
Protein powder is just a convenient, concentrated food — the type mostly affects digestion speed and dietary fit, not whether it "works."
Whey protein
A complete, fast-digesting milk-derived protein. The most researched protein supplement and a convenient way to hit a daily protein target, especially post-workout. Not suitable for those avoiding dairy.
Casein protein
Also milk-derived, but digests much more slowly, releasing amino acids gradually. Often used before bed for a slow overnight supply, though total daily intake still matters more than this specific timing choice.
Plant-based blends
Usually a mix of pea, rice, and/or hemp protein, combined specifically because blending sources compensates for any single plant protein's weaker amino acids — a practical example of variety solving what one plant protein alone doesn't.[1] A good plant blend performs comparably to whey for most practical purposes.
Bottom line: pick whichever type fits your diet and stomach best — the protein content is what matters most, not the source.
