The Zone diet explained: the 40/30/30 approach

The Zone diet popularized something novel for its time: a fixed macro percentage instead of a food list.

What it actually is

The Zone diet targets a fixed 40% of calories from carbohydrate, 30% from protein, and 30% from fat at every meal, developed in the 1990s around the idea of controlling insulin response and inflammation through consistent macro ratios rather than a food-inclusion/exclusion list the way paleo or keto work.

What the evidence says

The specific 40/30/30 ratio itself hasn't been shown to be uniquely superior to other reasonable macro splits for fat loss or health when calories and protein are held constant — its real contribution was popularizing macro-percentage thinking rather than a magic ratio.[1] A moderate-carb, higher-protein split like this is a perfectly reasonable target — it's just not meaningfully better than a well-calculated target based on your own numbers.
