Does fasted cardio actually burn more fat?
Fasted cardio does burn a higher percentage of fat during the session itself. That doesn't mean it burns more fat overall.
What happens during the session
Exercising in a fasted state does shift your body toward burning a higher proportion of fat for fuel during that session — one study found fat oxidation increased by roughly 73% during fasted cycling compared to the same session fed.
Why it doesn't add up to more fat loss
Despite that acute difference, controlled trials comparing fasted and fed cardio with matched total calories and protein find no significant difference in fat loss over time — in one 4-week trial, both groups lost the same amount of body fat.[1] The body appears to compensate over the full day: burning more fat in one session doesn't change your total calorie balance, which is what actually determines fat loss over weeks.
Fasted cardio is a fine choice if it fits your schedule or preference — it's just not a fat-loss advantage on its own.
