Hypothyroidism Food and Nutrition Basics
Hypothyroidism means the body lacks enough thyroid hormone. Food can support general health, but it cannot replace hormone that a damaged or removed thyroid no longer produces.
Diagnosis is biochemical
Symptoms such as fatigue, constipation, dry skin and weight change overlap with many conditions. Clinicians generally interpret TSH and free T4 with history, pregnancy status, medicines and pituitary context.
Eat a balanced pattern
Vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts, fish or other protein foods and unsaturated fats support cardiovascular, digestive and bone health. Hypothyroidism does not require a universal gluten-free, dairy-free or low-carbohydrate diet.
Iodine is necessary, but excess can harm
Iodized salt, dairy, seafood and eggs can contribute iodine. Kelp and iodine drops can deliver unpredictable or excessive amounts and may worsen autoimmune thyroid dysfunction.
Medication consistency matters more than perfection
Food, coffee, calcium, iron, antacids and other products can change levothyroxine absorption. Follow one repeatable schedule from the prescriber or pharmacist and report changes before lab interpretation.
Weight change is multifactorial
Treatment may reverse some fluid and metabolic effects, but thyroid hormone is not a weight-loss drug. Excess dosing can cause atrial fibrillation and bone loss. Use sustainable nutrition and activity rather than pursuing suppressed TSH.
Persistent symptoms need reassessment
If laboratory values are controlled but symptoms remain, clinicians may evaluate sleep, anemia, depression, medications, menopause, nutrient deficiency or other causes. Do not assume every symptom requires more thyroid hormone.
Avoid supplement substitution
“Thyroid support,” glandular and metabolism products may contain iodine, stimulants or undeclared thyroid hormone. Bring exact labels to care visits.
