Iron Absorption: Vitamin C, Tea and Calcium
Iron absorption changes with iron form, existing stores and the rest of the meal. Pairing strategies can help, especially for plant iron, but adherence and adequate intake matter more than perfect timing.
Vitamin C supports nonheme absorption
Citrus, berries, kiwi, tomatoes, peppers and broccoli can enhance nonheme iron absorption. Pair lentils with tomato, tofu with peppers or fortified cereal with fruit.
Tea and coffee can inhibit absorption
Polyphenols in tea and coffee can reduce nonheme iron absorption when consumed with a meal. People with deficiency may choose to separate them from iron-rich meals, but no one needs to abandon a valued beverage without reason.
Calcium can compete temporarily
