Iron Overload and Hemochromatosis: Food and Supplements

Iron overload can damage the liver, heart, pancreas and joints. Hereditary hemochromatosis is one cause, but high ferritin can also reflect inflammation, liver disease, infection or metabolic conditions.

Ferritin is not a pure iron gauge

Ferritin rises during inflammation and liver injury. One high value does not prove hemochromatosis, while family history and persistently high transferrin saturation may raise suspicion.
