Kidney Stone Food and Fluid Guide
Kidney stones are not one disease. Calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate, uric acid and cystine stones can require different strategies, so stone analysis and urine testing matter.
Fluid is usually foundational
For many stone formers without kidney failure or a fluid restriction, enough fluid—mainly water—helps dilute urine. The amount should be individualized by climate, activity, urine output and health conditions.
Do not automatically cut calcium
For calcium oxalate stones, adequate food calcium with meals can bind oxalate in the digestive tract. Severe calcium restriction may be counterproductive and can harm bone. Supplements require timing and clinical advice.
Oxalate advice needs precision
Only certain stone types call for oxalate attention. Spinach, rhubarb, wheat bran, nuts and some other foods can be high, but eliminating every plant food is unnecessary. Pairing appropriate calcium with meals and targeting major sources is more practical.
Sodium can increase stone risk
Higher sodium intake increases urinary calcium in some people. Compare processed foods, sauces, restaurant meals and seasoning mixes rather than focusing only on the salt shaker.
Animal protein may matter
Some stone plans moderate animal protein, particularly for uric acid or recurrent calcium stones. Adequate protein still matters; beans and other plant proteins may fit depending on oxalate, potassium and kidney status.
Do not rely on lemon alone
Citrate can help prevent some stones, and citrus may contribute, but lemonade does not replace evaluation, prescribed citrate or other treatment. Sugary drinks may create other concerns.
Ask for the stone report
Useful questions include the stone type, urine volume, calcium, oxalate, citrate, uric acid and sodium findings. A renal or urology dietitian can turn those results into targeted changes instead of a generic avoid list.
