Migraine Food Triggers, Diaries and Elimination Diets
A diary can reveal patterns, but correlation is easy to overread when migraine attacks have many overlapping influences.
Record the whole context
Note headache onset, aura or other symptoms, severity, sleep, cycle timing, stress, weather, meals, fluids, caffeine, alcohol and acute medicine. Recording only food makes food look more important than it may be.
Watch for the premonitory phase
Yawning, fatigue, mood change, thirst and food cravings can begin before pain. A chocolate craving followed by migraine does not automatically mean chocolate caused it.
Change one variable
If a food is repeatedly suspicious, discuss a time-limited removal and planned reintroduction. Eliminating ten foods at once increases nutritional and social cost while weakening the experiment.
Use repeatability, not one event
Look for a consistent timing relationship across multiple exposures. Also compare days when the food is eaten without an attack and attacks that happen without the food.
Protect against restriction
Seek dietitian support if the safe-food list keeps shrinking, meals provoke anxiety, weight drops unintentionally or eating becomes secretive or compulsive.
