Probiotics explained: what the evidence supports
"Probiotic" is a broad label covering everything from clinically tested strains to yogurt cups with a marketing sticker.
What counts as a probiotic
A probiotic is a live microorganism that, administered in adequate amounts, confers a health benefit. That definition is strain-specific — evidence for one strain of Lactobacillus doesn't automatically apply to a different strain, even within the same species. This is the single most misunderstood part of probiotic marketing.[1]
Where the evidence is strongest
- Antibiotic-associated diarrhea — certain strains modestly reduce incidence when taken alongside antibiotics
- Some forms of infectious diarrhea, particularly in children — moderate evidence for reduced duration
- Certain IBS symptom patterns — mixed but promising for specific strains
Where the evidence is weaker
Broad claims about "boosting immunity" or "detoxing" outrun what strain-specific trials actually show. Effects tend to be modest, strain-specific, and often don't replicate cleanly across studies — a common pattern in a young and fast-moving research area.[1]
Food sources vs. supplements
Fermented foods — yogurt with live cultures, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso — deliver live bacteria alongside genuine nutritional value, though the specific strains and doses are far less standardized than in a clinical supplement. Both are reasonable; neither is a cure-all.
