BCAAs explained: are they actually worth taking?
BCAA supplements were huge before people realized whole protein already contains them — and does more.
What they actually do
BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, valine) can trigger the molecular signaling that starts muscle protein synthesis, mainly through leucine. But signaling alone isn't enough — building new muscle protein needs a full supply of all 9 essential amino acids as raw material, not just the three BCAAs.[1]
Why whole protein still wins
In direct comparisons, 5.6g of isolated BCAAs after resistance training produced roughly half the muscle protein synthesis response of an equivalent dose of complete protein — because the BCAA-only dose runs out of the other essential amino acids needed to keep building. Interestingly, "topping up" a suboptimal whey dose with extra leucine can match a full whey dose's effect, but that's a leucine-boosting strategy, not evidence for BCAAs as a standalone product.[1]
If you're already hitting your daily protein target from whole food or a complete protein powder, isolated BCAAs add little. They may have a narrow use case for people training fasted or restricting calories heavily, but for most people, the money is better spent on more complete protein.
