Whey vs. casein protein: what's the real difference?
Both are complete milk proteins — the real difference is digestion speed, not quality.
The actual difference
Whey and casein are both complete proteins derived from milk, supplying all 9 essential amino acids. The practical difference is digestion speed: whey is absorbed quickly, producing a fast spike in blood amino acids, while casein forms a gel in the stomach and releases amino acids slowly over several hours.[1]
When each makes more sense
Whey's fast absorption fits post-workout or any time you want protein quickly. Casein's slow release fits before a long gap without food — before bed being the most common use case, to keep amino acids available overnight. Neither is inherently superior for muscle building; given our earlier point on the post-workout anabolic window, total daily protein intake matters far more than which type you use when.
