| Official nutrition item | Calories | Protein | Sodium | Carbs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original Recipe Chicken Breast | 390 | 39 g | 1,190 mg | 11 g |

| Original Recipe Chicken Thigh | 280 | 19 g | 850 mg | 7 g |
Values are from KFC’s official U.S. interactive nutrition menu as reviewed in August 2026. Product availability and recipes vary. A breast has far more protein than a drumstick, but it also represents a larger portion and more sodium.
Build the complete plate
Choose one or two chicken pieces based on appetite, then add a side that fills a gap. Corn or green beans, where available, changes the plate differently from fries, biscuits or macaroni and cheese. None of those foods must be forbidden; the point is to count what is actually ordered.
Options and limits by dietary pattern
- Higher protein: a chicken breast supplies 39 g in the listed standard portion. Extra pieces may overshoot appetite and sodium needs.
- Lower energy: a drumstick is a smaller portion at 130 calories. Pair it with a suitable side rather than assuming the smallest entrée is a complete meal.
- Lower sodium: KFC is difficult territory for a strict target. A breast alone lists 1,190 mg; sauces and sides add more. Review the full order.
- Vegetarian or vegan: there may be vegetable sides, but shared fryers, seasonings and animal-derived ingredients limit certainty. KFC does not offer a dependable nationwide vegan entrée in this reviewed U.S. snapshot.
- Gluten-aware: breaded chicken contains wheat, and shared fryers or preparation make cross-contact a central concern.
Skin removal is not exact math
Removing skin or breading after purchase changes the food eaten, but the official entry describes the standard product. Do not subtract an arbitrary number from the nutrition panel. If precise tracking matters, choose a standardized menu item you will eat as sold.
Sauce and side math
A 390-calorie breast is not a 390-calorie meal after a biscuit, fries, dipping sauce and sweet drink. Add each published component. For blood pressure, kidney disease or a prescribed sodium limit, the sodium total deserves equal billing with calories and protein.
